Taste for Health - Turmeric Oatmeal

During this Taste for Health food demonstration, we made turmeric oatmeal. Turmeric has a plethora of health benefits, mostly due to a compound it contains called curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. In our Urban Garden class on April 1, we learned how to propagate turmeric and we are currently waiting on its germination.


Oatmeal is a great meal to have to start your day because it has a lot of fiber, so it will keep you full for a long time. Adding nutritional yeast adds a nutty flavor to the oatmeal. It is a complete source of protein and the B vitamins, which play a role in converting food into energy. Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast made from sugar cane and beet molasses.  Adding berries or other seasonal fruit onto your oatmeal will only add more nutrition and give your day a fresh start.

1/2 cup Steel Cut Oats
1 cup Water
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder

Nutritional yeast
Seasonal fruit
